Poco M3, analysis: lowering the price so much no miracles are achieved … except with the battery

LITTLE , until recently under the full protection of Xiaomi, has not had enough with a year round thanks to its POCO X3 , one of the sensations of recent months, and is launched to cover more of the market with its new model POCO M3, this time focused on the input range .

The POCO M3 brings together just everything a user expects of the brand: good features, large screen, battery … and all this with the affordable price as the tip of a dangerous iceberg for its direct rivals. And even with a design that does not leave you indifferent.Volume 90%

A design that does not go unnoticed

POCO has been very smart proposing a terminal that will be very identifiable by design. And it is not that it can boast of an outstanding finish or record dimensions … in a positive way. But that brightly colored back (especially the yellow one) attached to the camera module inside a black band with the big brand name , has been created to attract attention. The POCO M3 compensates for a discreet physical appearance at the level of dimensions by playing with a rear of the most striking that we remember

This peculiarity slightly compensates for a physical aspect that seems to me to be well achieved although nothing remarkable. The back is made of polycarbonate with a texture that imitates the skin . It curves slightly towards the edges, which achieves some softness to the touch and very slightly compensates for the impression of a large and very thick terminal that this Poco M3 leaves us in hand.

Its almost 10 mm thickness penalize the comfort of use, and also favor that despite the texture of the back, the POCO M3 is a terminal that can tend to escape from certain hands. Do not be careless. Better with a cover.

That rear is not immune to fingerprints either , as it might seem. In the blue model, which is the one we have analyzed, they are marked with some ease, something not recommended for those of us who have some OCD when cleaning smartphones.

The use of plastic in the finish of the back and the frame makes it much easier that the weight of this POCO M3 does not skyrocket as it would correspond by size and thickness. It stays below 200 grams , resulting in this sense a terminal that does not tire.We can’t deny that the skin-like texture and the stretched camera module with the logo is eye-catching and unique.

The POCO M3 is very stable on a flat surface and supports its handling and use without problems when we have it on a table, for example.

Although the back is what gives this LITTLE M3 personality, we must not forget the great work of Xiaomi, the manufacturer of the terminal, on the front.

For the price of the equipment we have quite reduced frames around the screen (with the sole exception of the lower frame), as well as a rather discreet drop-type notch.

Fingerprint reader on the power button

A design decision that has left me somewhat cold has been the placement of the integrated fingerprint reader on the side power button of the terminal. Due to the size of the POCO M3, its location on the right side forces me to think too much before proceeding to unlock. When this same button, because of my way of holding the phones with the left mallet, is located on the other side, it gives me better results.

I almost would have preferred its placement at the rear. Low screen was something unattainable efficiently in this price range. In any case, if you personally adapt to this fingerprint reader, it is quite fast (not one of the best) and reliable.

The best thing, as always in these entry ranges, is to choose to combine fingerprint unlocking with face identification, which, with sufficient light, is also in line with what we must demand of a smartphone in this price range. The little optimization of the POCO layer makes even the fingerprint reader or face identification look like slow elements in this POCO M3

However, as we will see later in the part dedicated to software, the little optimization of the operating system results in a continuous feeling of heaviness when it comes to identifying ourselves with both fingerprint and face.

The rest of the physical elements of this POCO M3 are not the usual ones either, in this case positive. To the USB-C charging port , we must add a triple tray that allows us to have a microSD and two nanoSIM cards at the same time . That slot is located in the upper part of the right side.

The physical controls are concentrated on the left side, where in addition to the fingerprint reader (which we remember serves as the power button) there is room for the volume control, located just above. Its situation has been designed to reach it with the free hand that remains when we hold the terminal with the other. The Poco M3 maintains the 3.5mm port and offers the user stereo sound with a discreet second speaker in the upper frame.

The surprise comes in the upper frame, of generous dimensions as we have seen from the thickness of the POCO M3. There is room for a 3.5 m port and a speaker, so, beyond the quality, the starting point at the sound level of this Poco M3 is well argued with the headphone port and stereo speakers .

However, in practice this is not the case at all. The sound is effectively stereo on paper, but the balance is clearly out of balance in favor of the lower speaker , so the sensation of stereo sound can hardly be appreciated in operation.”Stereo speaker seems, discreet sound is”

As for the sound quality , let’s just leave it in that due to its power we can fill an average room without problem but without trying more than that: to fill it.

Print screen for input range

The POCO M3 arrives on the market wielding a 6.53-inch IPS panel where the highlight is the resolution of 2340×1080 pixels. The result is a screen with a density of almost 400 dpi , very remarkable for the input range. It is something very welcome.Always keeping in mind the price of the POCO M3, the experience with the 6.5-inch IPS screen is one of the best of this new Poco phone

Combined with the very satisfactory tactile response and the Gorilla Glass 3 protection , the user experience with this screen more than meets what is expected in a terminal below 150 euros.
